Freelancing is an interesting topic. What does it mean to be a freelancer? What are the benefits of freelancing? What are the downsides of freelancing? What should you do if you want to become a freelancer? I’m sure that these questions have popped in your head before, and in this article, we will answer them for you!
What does it mean to be a freelancer?
To be a freelancer is to have an independent job that you do not need to go into the office for. It means that as a freelancer, you work from your home or anywhere else where there’s an internet connection and can access your email! You are also able to set up your own hours so say goodbye to those early morning meetings you hated going in for!
What is the definition of freelancing?
Freelancing means that you can work anytime and anywhere as long as there’s an internet connection. What’s more, freelancers are able to set their own hours so working in the mornings or staying late at work is not necessary. What else? Freelancing means that you can do anything that is related to your job! No need for a boss telling you what needs to be done-you decide how and when it gets done!
What are the benefits of freelancing?
The main benefit would have to be freedom. As I mentioned above, with freelancing there comes independence which allows people who freelance make their own schedule and get paid accordingly depending on project deadlines. What does this mean? This means there isn’t someone breathing down your neck saying “get this finished by tomorrow” because YOU are responsible.
What are some downsides of freelancing?
Although there are many benefits to freelancing, it is important to be aware of some potential problems. What will your schedule look like if you become a freelancer? For example, since you make your own hours and can work from anywhere- this means that sometimes communication (and other things) might fall through the cracks. What does this mean? This means that you may not always hear back from your clients which can be frustrating if they are waiting for an important update or change to their project! What should you do in this case? If communication becomes a problem, try sending follow-up emails just to check up on things and see how projects are going 🙂 What if it doesn’t work? What should you do then? If communication becomes a problem with your client, don’t give up! Instead, try to find another way to communicate so that things run as smoothly as possible. For example- sometimes phone calls are the best option or even video chats so clients can see what you are working on and vice versa. What if none of these work? What should you do then? If phone calls, emails, and video chats don’t help with your problem- it may be time to consider another professional!
Why do you need to become a freelancer?
There are many great things about being a freelancer, but here are some top reasons why you should consider becoming one! Flexibility You set your own hours so if for example, you want to take Wednesday afternoons off because your kids have school activities- no problem! As long as you meet deadlines and complete all projects on time, then this is totally fine 🙂 Better Compensation This might sound like common sense, but when working under someone else (in an office,) compensation isn’t always equal.
What should you do if you want to become a freelancer?
If you are interested in becoming a freelancer, the first step is to determine what kind of work you want to do. Well, say for example if your background was graphic design and this would be something that comes naturally to you-this could be an option! However, maybe this isn’t really up your alley and you would prefer to freelance in accounting or blogging. What is most important when it comes to freelancing is that the job you do interests you, so think about your strengths before jumping into anything!
What if you have no idea what your interests are? What should you do then? The answer is simple-try new things! Pick something that seems interesting to you, give it a go, and see where this takes you. What’s the worst that can happen? What if you hate it and decide to quit right after starting? Well, no harm done! However, what is more, likely to happen is that you will find something new and exciting about yourself which would be a complete win-win situation 🙂
You might not always know where this road takes you but if you are brave enough to take the journey, never lose sight of your destination!
What’s your goal? What do you want to accomplish in life? Maybe freelancing isn’t for you, but if it is- go get ‘em!
What’s the next step once I’ve decided that I want to become a freelancer?
Once you have finally made up your mind and know what kind of work you’re interested in, the next step is to build your portfolio! What does this mean? It means that you need samples of previous work so clients know what you are capable of. What should go into a freelancer’s portfolio? Anything related to your profession goes so if for example, you want to be an accountant then it would be a good idea to have samples of your work on hand. What if you don’t have anything that previous clients can see? What should you do then? If this is the case, start small by creating projects for family and friends so they can give feedback on what needs improvement or change 🙂
What if this doesn’t work out? What should you do then? If you haven’t had any luck with family and friends, don’t worry! There are many freelancing sites so it is possible to get started without previous clients. What are some of these websites? Some of the most popular ones include Freelancer, Upwork, Guru, and Fiverr.
What should you take away from this article? Freelancing is a great way to get started with your career but it isn’t always easy. It means that the work can be challenging at times and finding success might not happen overnight!
